Film Analysis:

Jalin Conyers’ athletic ability was a helpful tool in guiding Gruver High School to a state championship as a junior with 12 catches for 224 yards and three touchdowns in the championship game. As a senior, Conyers put himself on even higher ground with 61 catches for 1,225 yards and 19 touchdowns and earned a four-star recruit ranking. He was a busy student participating in football, basketball, track, and golf, and he showcased how talented he was.

Initially, he committed to Oklahoma but didn’t see the field for the Sooners before transferring to Arizona State for three seasons before winding up at Texas Tech for his senior season. Across the four seasons he played collegiate football, Conyers compiled 104 receptions for 1166 and 11 touchdowns while adding 30 rushes for 123 yards and three touchdowns.

Primarily used as a “move tight end,” Conyers lined up everywhere for the Red Raiders offense, including running back and wildcat quarterback. He struggles with technique when blocking, with erratic hand placement, lunging, leading with his shoulder, and falling off blocks. His impact as a blocker improves while on the move pre-snap, getting better angles and momentum to carry out the task. He has the size and body type to develop as a blocker but needs to work on his technique.

Better from the slot or detached from the offensive line, Conyers can be made a mismatch problem for defenses when lined up against slower linebackers or smaller safeties. While he's still developing a route tree and nuance to create separation against man coverage, he flashes head usage and body manipulation at the top of his routes to break quickly and get open. Conyers will vary his route speed in his stem, but he isn’t explosive in and out of breaks, so defenders in man coverage have an easier time staying in his hip pocket. He shines when the ball is in the air and can show off his ball skills. Conyers plays with great timing downfield, strong hands through contact, and will adjust well to the ball flight to make acrobatic catches when needed. Part of his versatility shows up when he has the ball in his hands with good change-of-direction skills and a feel for space that allows him to make defenders miss.

While Conyers' production isn’t there, his athletic profile, ball skills, and versatility are intriguing. He needs to develop his blocking technique and route tree to round out his impact as an all-around tight end.
