Film Analysis:
Garrett Dellinger has been a core member of a stacked LSU front five for the past several seasons. Throughout his career, he has started at left tackle, left guard, and even center. Dellinger has worn many hats for the Tigers and now projects as one of the premier mid-round interior linemen in this class. A highly recruited prospect coming out of high school, Dellinger’s standout traits have carried over into his college game and now will suit him well at the next level.
Dellinger’s best trait is his strength. He boasts a top-heavy build complemented by a strong base and rare natural power. This strength is evident in both phases of the game. In the run game, he effectively handles heavy two-gappers and effortlessly displaces smaller defenders. In pass protection, he weathers power rushes with ease, giving up minimal ground even when opponents attack his chest. His core strength will undoubtedly translate to the NFL.
Dellinger is, in many ways, the ideal offensive lineman. His elite anchor and stable base provide a consistent foundation that allows him to develop without significant physical hurdles. He’s a player you can plug into your line immediately and expect to compete with NFL-caliber talent.
However, while Dellinger has many strengths, there’s room for improvement in his athleticism, particularly as it relates to how he projects to the next level. His heavy upper body slightly hampers his reactionary quickness, making it difficult for him to recover within reps. This is especially noticeable in the run game when defenders penetrate aggressively or slant across his face; he struggles to redirect and maintain the fit of his block.
Improving his elasticity as a blocker will enable him to strain through reps while staying in phase with his assignments. With time to refine his technique and develop physically, Dellinger has the potential to become a decade-long starter in the NFL.
