Film Analysis:

Terrance Ferguson brings a three-down skill set with his ability to make plays both as a pass-catcher and a run blocker. He excels on perimeter blocks, securing the edge for his running back. Ferguson makes plays from multiple alignments and has the potential to thrive as the “move” tight end (TE) in an NFL offense. With mismatch potential, Ferguson has a solid floor and a high ceiling as a prospect.

As a big, strong target, Ferguson is an ideal “safety blanket” option in the middle of the field for a quarterback. He plays with good body control and ball skills to win contested catches. Ferguson can align in the slot and create physical mismatches against smaller nickel defenders. He runs routes with the strength to fight through early contact in his stem and knows how to use his frame to box out defenders when the ball arrives.

Ferguson effectively high-points passes in contested-catch situations, making him a promising red-zone target. He has the skill set and athleticism to play both the Y and F positions, giving the defense multiple looks to prepare for. As an effective “big slot” option, he has the ability to thrive in the middle of the field while being flanked by more explosive receivers on the outside. He is adept at finding voids in zone defenses, locating soft spots within coverage, and exploiting them as a big target for his quarterback.

Ferguson is a solid and effective run blocker. He gives good effort and uses his frame well to seal off defenders and create running lanes for his RB. When unblocked, he can climb to block linebackers, safeties, and cornerbacks on the perimeter.

As an athlete, Ferguson is moderate in a straight line. He may only outrun or win a few foot races against athletic NFL defenders, and his vertical speed leaves something to be desired. He could also be a better route runner, lacking nuance at the position. Ferguson is more of a physical winner than a shifty route-runner who creates great separation at the top of his routes. Instead, he limits his separation by rounding his breaks rather than using sharper cuts to quickly shake man coverage defenders. He benefited from his speed at the receiver position and from the scheme that often placed him in open spaces within the defense. I hope he can improve his one-on-one route-running opportunities this season.

Overall, Ferguson is a strong-framed pass-catcher with upside as a blocker. He has proven production throughout his career, and his athletic ability suggests he can be a starting TE in the NFL, serving as a reliable pass-catcher in both horizontal and vertical offenses.
