Terrance Ferguson NFL Draft Scouting Report

Terrance Ferguson, TE, Oregon

Size:

Height: 6053

Weight: 247

Arm: 32 ⅞”

Hand: 9 ¼”

Accomplishments:

First-Team All-Pac-12 (2023) • All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention (2022) • Four-star recruit

“Terrence Ferguson is a well-built pass-catcher with a strong frame and catch radius, which makes him a red-zone weapon for his offense.”

Strengths:

  • Well-proportioned and strong NFL frame

  • Strong and reliable hands-catcher

  • Alignment-versatile TE (Y and F)

  • Strength to make contested catches and get yards after contact

Concerns:

  • Can he be a one-on-one winner without being schemed open?

  • Nuance as a route-runner

  • Routes are rounded instead of sharp cuts at the breakpoint which limits initial separation

  • Vertical athleticism and speed

Film Analysis:

Terrence Ferguson brings a three-down skill set with his ability to make plays as a pass-catcher and run blocker. He works well on perimeter blocks to secure the edge for his RB. Ferguson makes plays from multiple alignments and can live as the “move” TE in an NFL offense. With some mismatch potential, Ferguson has a good floor and ceiling as a prospect.

Being a big, strong target, Ferguson is an ideal red-zone option. He plays with body control and ball skills to win contested catches. Ferguson can align in the slot and create physical mismatches against smaller nickel defenders. He runs routes with good strength to fight through contact early in his stem. He knows how to use his frame to box out defenders when the ball arrives.

Ferguson effectively high-points passes in contested-catch situations. This leads to his promise as a reliable red-zone target. He has the skill set and athleticism to play both the Y and F positions to give the defense multiple looks to prepare for. He is an effective “big slot” option with middle-of-the-field prowess to live there while being flanked by more explosive receivers on the outside. He is a grass/void finder against zone defenses. Ferguson knows how to locate the soft spots within the coverage and exploit them as a big target for his quarterback to spot.

Ferguson is an effective and solid run blocker. He gives good effort and uses his frame well to walk off and sell angles for his RB. If left unblocked, he can climb to linebackers, safeties, and cornerbacks on the perimeter.

Ferguson is a moderate athlete in a straight line. He will only outrun or win a few foot races against athletic NFL defenders. The vertical speed leaves something to be desired. Ferguson could be a better route-runner and lacks nuance at the position. He is more of a physical winner than a shifty route-runner who creates great separation at the top of his routes. Instead, Ferguson limits his separation by rounding his breaks instead of using sharper cuts to separate quickly from man coverage defenders. He benefited from plenty of speed at the receiver position and the scheme pushing him into open spaces within the defense. I hope he wins more one-on-one opportunities as a route-runner this season.

Overall, Ferguson is a strong-framed pass-catcher with upside as a blocker. He projects as a TE2 for an offense with 12-personnel packages and flexes into spread/empty concepts. His ability to play the Y and F positions creates good value as he develops as a route-runner and run blocker. He has starting potential as a prospect.
