Film Analysis:
Kyren Lacy had his best statistical season as a senior in 2023 alongside Brian Thomas Jr. and Malik Nabers. As the third receiver option in the high-flying LSU offense, Lacy had nearly 560 yards and seven touchdowns on 30 receptions, all career highs. He was the beneficiary of the defense's attention on the soon-to-be first-round picks and took advantage, showcasing the talent he consistently flashed throughout his career.
A versatile receiver, Lacy lined up throughout the formation for LSU and wasn’t limited in his route tree. From his releases, Lacy understands how to move defenders out of his way or avoid obstacles to maintain his direction. He sells vertically through the stem with square shoulders and breaks at the top, careful to watch for leverage giveaways from the defender. He’s a good route-runner and flashes head and eye usage to manipulate defenders. When he catches the football, he sees the field well and has a plan of attack ready to go, often making the first man miss. While he isn’t a burner, he’s quicker laterally than expected and his ball-tracking downfield can make up for his lack of elite speed.
With his teammates' departure from 2023, Lacy's big question is whether he can lead a young, talented wide receiver room and draw coverage away from them. The flashes have always been there, but now it’s time for him to be ‘the guy’ at LSU. He dealt with some drops last season, which he’s spoken about, and he's ready to lock in more. Developing nuance against zone coverage in finding those soft spots can take his game to a new level.
Overall, Lacy is a talented receiver who shows all it takes to be a No. 1 receiver in college. He just needs to put it all together and be more consistent.
