Film Analysis:
Antwane Wells Jr. transferred to Ole Miss after stringing together a 2021 season with more than 1,000 yards receiving and a 2022 season with more than 900 yards receiving. His 2023 season was cut short due to an early injury. When healthy, Wells is a versatile, reliable, playmaking receiver who can win on all three levels of the defense using his high-level physical tools.
Wells is capable of being an alignment-versatile player who can align as an X receiver, in the slot, or even in the backfield to provide advantageous matchups for the offense. Working into his releases, Wells appears to be versatile and although he has a strong, stout frame, he has quickness that he uses to dictate pace to defensive backs and win quickly. Wells can also use his strong frame to power through pressman situations and quickly get upfield. Into his route, Wells showcases fluid hips and a high ability to accelerate/decelerate quickly, which allows him to run the entire route tree effectively. Wells creates separation at the top of the route at the breakpoint on short and intermediate routes while also having the ability to separate vertically up the field.
While Wells proves to be a plus-level route-runner, his most dangerous trait is his run-after-the-catch ability. Wells is a well-proportioned receiver who has a strong lower half and a well-built upper body. This combined with his athletic ability and short-area quickness/elusiveness makes him a tough tackle for defenders. Wells can take a short throw (screen) and pick up significant yardage by maneuvering through a maze of defenders. When Wells catches the ball with space in front of him, he can quickly accelerate through arm tackles and turn upfield quickly.
Regarding Wells' improvement as a player, the biggest area of improvement for his game is concentration drops. There are situations where it appears that Wells is so focused on what he will do after he catches the football that he takes his eyes off of the football too quickly, which results in a drop.
Overall, Wells possesses all of the physical tools combined with natural playmaking ability to become a highly productive receiver in the NFL.
