Film Analysis:

Jamaree Caldwell spent the last two seasons playing along the defensive line for Houston after transferring from a JUCO. He played in 19 games for the Cougars, establishing himself as a havoc-creating and alignment-versatile defensive lineman. He will be coached by Dan Lanning for the Oregon Ducks this season, an opportunity to raise his draft stock for the 2025 NFL Draft.

Caldwell adds quickness and impressive power to a defensive line room. He will walk blockers into the backfield with a two-handed bull/power rush against the run. Caldwell’s power and quickness at the point of attack are overwhelming to blockers. He fires off the ball and upfield to quickly get his hands into his blocker’s jersey to create a surge and force the running back to adjust paths. Caldwell can two-gap against the run and keep his linebackers clean to flow to the football. His lower-body strength assists him in driving OL off their spots, opening opportunities for him to make a play on the ball-carrier. I would label him as a “door closer” in the run game. He is a physical collision player who is not against contact of any kind. He is advanced at defeating reach blocks with well-timed strikes, active feet, and lateral movements.

Caldwell converts his quickness to speed with a runway to the QB. He does a good job getting his hands fitted into the OL to control the rep and work his way to the QB. He has a relentless motor and does not stop his pursuit. He fires off the ball with a quick first step to slice between gaps and disrupt the flow of the play. Caldwell will drive an OL deep into the pocket, creating an inside track to sacks or register a hit on the QB.

Caldwell will be driven back by the duo (double team) blocks against the run. I count this issue as processing running play types. He must improve in recognizing and diagnosing gap versus zone run concepts for better success. Caldwell can work to improve his approach to handling the different blocking combinations from the OL. At times, he presses the wrong side of the blocker, opening a cut-back lane for the ball-carrier. Arm length and wingspan are functional, not elite. Caldwell has a few reps where he did not secure the ball-carrier in the backfield because of his lack of arm length. He will get stalled out by an OL if punches are late. Limiting Caldwell’s chances of maximizing his strength by locking out and owning the leverage advantage.

Caldwell projects as a productive and effective 4i or 5-technique IDL in an odd-front defense. His combination of power and quickness off the ball will create havoc in the backfield on both run and passing downs.
