Film Analysis:
Carson Beck plays in a multiple offense that uses everything from RPO quick game action to traditional pro-style concepts to push the ball vertically down the field. Beck executes all facets well. Beck is a rhythmic thrower who when allotted the time and space to be technically sound, is an accurate passer—especially in the short and intermediate portions of the field. Beck's best traits have been his accuracy and understanding of ball placement to put the ball in places where there is a high percentage chance that only the receiver can make a play on the ball.
Both pre-snap and post-snap, Beck does a good job of identifying the defense and is a high-IQ player, understanding defenses and identifying important keys to a defense. He is rarely tricked with pre- or post-snap looks. Beck appears to have a good understanding of getting through his progressions, identifying open receivers, and delivering accurate passes. Beck has a quick release and efficient throwing motion to get the ball out quickly. Beck understands how to mix the velocity on throws and can fit the ball in tight windows and also layer throws to throw it over the underneath defender and in front of the deep defender.
The most impressive part of Beck’s game is his ball placement. Beck appears to have an in-depth understanding of putting the ball in great spots for the receivers, especially in one-on-one situations while the receiver is working vertically up the field. Beck can drop the ball over the receiver's shoulder or throw accurately back-shoulder. Working the middle of the field against zone in tight spaces, Beck understands when to put the ball in low, high, and/or away in situations to prevent defenders from having an opportunity to get to the football and disrupt the play.
Overall as a thrower, Beck has proven to be a high-IQ player who, given the ideal conditions, can execute at a high level making accurate and timely throws all over the field.
Beck's improvement as a quarterback mainly has to do with how he handles defensive pressure. While Beck appears to operate smoothly in unpressurized situations, when he is pressured, it results in negative plays. When Beck is pressured, there are overthrows which can result in interceptions or sacks because he doesn't speed up his process enough. Beck's athletic ability appears to be good, but when he is forced out of the pocket and has to make unstructured throws on the run, his accuracy and decision-making decrease—either missing his target or potentially throwing the ball in situations where it can be intercepted.
Overall, Beck's success in the NFL appears to be attached to him being drafted into a structured offensive situation where he can step in and operate the offense.
