Film Analysis:
Mykel Williams, a former five-star recruit, has been a part of a deep and talented Georgia front rotation since his freshman year. Williams has consistently increased his playing time and has played a multitude of positions in a complex and multiple Georgia defensive scheme.
Williams has aligned everywhere from head-up over the center in a 0-tech to aligning as a stand-up edge rusher, taking advantage of his rare combination of size, length, and athleticism as a versatile front-seven piece. Williams' foundation as a player is his athleticism at 6-foot-5 and 265 pounds, which sets the foundation for most of his playmaking ability as a front-seven defender.
Playing the run, Williams wins in multiple ways depending on alignment. When aligned as an edge rusher, Williams can set the edge by shooting his hands and using his arm length to control offensive linemen. Williams has enough strength in his base to hold the line of scrimmage and force runs back inside. When Williams is reduced inside, he wins with quickness by shooting gaps and getting penetration to potentially disrupt the play and make a tackle in the backfield.
Williams' continued development as a player has to do with him improving the detailed parts of his game against the run and as a pass rusher. Williams, when reduced inside, struggles to hold the point of attack against IOL. In double-team situations, he can be displaced off the line of scrimmage and not shed the offensive lineman. Williams needs to work on his pad level and understand that it takes a lower pad level to hold the point of attack against the run when reduced inside than it would take aligned on the edge. As a pass rusher, Williams wins because of his high-level athletic traits but he needs to work on the details of his pass rush, like utilizing his hands and working better pass rush angles.
Overall, Williams is an intriguing prospect with a lot of upside because of his versatility, but his biggest jump in development may come when he is focused solely on one specific position and working on the details of his craft.
