Film Analysis:

Javon Bullard is a talented defensive back with a feisty demeanor. Effort should never be in question. He will chase plays down from the backside of the formation. He prevented a long TD run versus Auburn by running down their QB. He is a willing and active participant in run support. He does a solid job leveraging the football and tracking the ball-carrier. Surprisingly, he takes on blocks well enough using his hands to avoid being overtaken.

Bullard has a versatile skill set. He can effectively and efficiently play both nickel and free safety. He is instinctive with strong play-recognition abilities. Bullard reads backfield action quickly to diagnose run versus pass well. With his instincts and play speed, Bullard is a playmaker at the FS position. He does a good job playing over top and not allowing anything behind him.

Bullard tracks the ball well from both high and low coverage. He consistently got his hand on passes to create pass breakups and opportunities for turnovers. In man coverage, he is sticky with staying inside the hip pocket of the WR. He plays both press and off-man coverage. He hinges routes well to maintain leverage.

Bullard’s frame and build are on the smaller side. He will not be for everyone because of this fact. He does not appear to have elite sideline-to-sideline speed/range. However, he can work as a single high-post safety in spurts. Bullard is always around the football. I would like to see him come down with more interceptions for his ball production’s sake. I counted possibly three or four near interceptions that would change his draft identity to a potential ball-hawk. Tackling needs consistency with technique and wrapping up, but this is coachable. Arm length will be important to how teams view his fit within their defensive systems.

Bullard projects as a starting free safety/nickel hybrid defender with high football IQ and instincts. He has outstanding effort and grit that defensive coaches will love. Potential to generate his share of turnovers on Sundays. His game reminds me of Jalen Pitre and/or Budda Baker.
