Who’s Best Bet To Win 2024 College Football National Championship?

The Georgia Bulldogs captured their second consecutive College Football Playoff National Championship on Monday with a dominant 65-7 victory over the overmatched TCU Horned Frogs. Georgia became the first program to win back-to-back national championships since the Alabama squads of 2011 and 2012. It capped an incredible season for the undefeated Bulldogs.

Attention now swiftly turns to the 2023 college football campaign. Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs will be aiming to make history by capturing a third straight national title. Georgia once again faces the challenge of reloading. Georgia’s graduating class will send a plethora of talents to the 2023 NFL Draft, including defensive tackle Jalen Carter and quarterback Stetson Bennett. The likes of Alabama, Michigan, Clemson, Ohio State, and LSU will attempt to end Georgia’s dominance.

BetOnline recently updated their odds for the 2024 College Football Playoff National Champions. They are as follows:

  • Georgia (+225)
  • Alabama (+500)
  • Ohio State (+750)
  • USC (12/1)
  • LSU (16/1)
  • Notre Dame (18/1)
  • FSU (18/1)
  • Michigan (20/1)
  • Clemson (22/1)
  • Texas (28/1)
  • Penn State (33/1)
  • Utah (40/1)
  • Tennessee (40/1)
  • Oregon (50/1)
  • TCU (50/1)

THE FAVORITE AND MY PICK: GEORGIA

Smart’s Bulldogs faced challenges entering this football campaign after losing the likes of Travon Walker, Jordan Davis, and several others to the 2022 NFL Draft. Smart proved he was capable of navigating through those difficulties by winning another national championship. There’s little reason to believe Smart can’t repeat that success after losing Bennett, Carter, Kelee Ringo, and others this coming year.

Georgia may dominate the 2023 NFL Draft, but their roster will still be littered with proven talents. Tight end Brock Bowers, linebacker Smael Mondon Jr., and cornerback Javon Bullard, the latter of which dominated Monday’s title game, will all return. The outcome of an expected quarterback battle between Carson Beck, Brock Vandagriff, and Gunner Stockton may determine Georgia’s ceiling. Beck is the favorite to win the job and possesses every tool necessary to provide Georgia with an admirable replacement for Bennett.

THE NO. 1 CONTENDER: ALABAMA

Alabama is in an interesting position. The Crimson Tide missed the College Football Playoff for the second time since 2014. They’re also losing superstar quarterback Bryce Young, who’s in contention to become the No. 1 overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Alabama is also expected to lose Jordan Battle, Brian Branch, Henry To’o To’o, and Will Anderson Jr. to the draft in addition to Young. Offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien is also expected to depart Alabama in favor of a return to the NFL. There are sweeping changes coming to Alabama’s personnel and coaching staff.

Unless Alabama dives into the transfer portal, Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson will compete for the starting quarterback job. Nick Saban’s squads are always littered with talent. There’s just a bit too much uncertainty here for them to overtake Georgia as 2024 favorites.

DON’T SLEEP ON: USC

USC will be entering the 2023 campaign with arguably the best quarterback in the nation. Caleb Williams is the early favorite to be the No. 1 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft. Williams was electric this season, having completed 333-of-500 passing attempts (66.6% completion percentage) for 4,537 yards, 42 touchdowns, and five interceptions. The reigning Heisman Trophy winner is going to be downright scary with another offseason of development under his belt.

Trojans head coach Lincoln Riley was brought to Southern California to deliver a National Championship to the football program. The Trojans showcased considerable growth under Riley’s tutelage in the first year of his tenure. Expectations will be raised in 2023.
