Film Analysis:
At Alabama, Jase McClellan has been part of a running back committee, where his role and workload have continued to elevate throughout his career. Being a part of a committee, McClellan has been able to successfully fill many roles, which is a nod to McClellan's versatility. Based on the situation, McClellan can be used as the premier feature back for the game or as a complementary third-down back.
Throughout his career, McClellan has been utilized as both an inside/outside zone runner and also a gap runner in between the tackles. The 2023 season was McClellan's highest workload of his career and he showed to be best as an inside zone runner.
On inside zone runs, McClellan shows good patience, allowing blocks to develop in front of him and also having the vision to hit the crease created by the offensive line. McClellan has an above-average burst which allows him to quickly get through the hole and to the second level of the defense. On the second level, McClellan can make lateral cuts to attempt to make defenders miss, while also showing good contact balance and ability to bounce off of defenders' tackles to pick up extra yardage. McClellan’s value as a running back comes from him being a high-IQ player that is consistent in his approach so coaches know exactly what they are getting from him when he is in the game
The part of McClellan's game that garners the most concern is his athletic ability. McClellan shows to have a solid initial burst but lacks the top-end speed to pull away from defenders consistently. There are numerous occasions where defenders can track him down and stop him for a short gain on plays that could have developed into longer gains. This also shows on outside runs where he has to use foot speed to win the corner and he doesn't.
Overall, McClellan is a running back who is best served as a part of a committee where he is capable of filling various roles as a running back.
