Film Analysis:
Utah’s Sataoa Laumea is an experienced offensive lineman who has been one of the better players in the country over the last four years. Laumea was a day-one starter for the Utes, playing right guard his first three years and then right tackle his last year. He has earned All-Conference honors every year of his career and is looking to parlay his collegiate success into the NFL.
As a prospect, Laumea has a lot to like. He has above-average size and very good length. He is a good athlete overall and has the requisite physical talent to excel at the next level. In the run game, Laumea displays very good power at the point of attack to generate movement and clear his gap. He has very strong hands and can control and steer his man out of the way once latched. He has good overall foot quickness and coordination when working to the second level and is very good on screens and pulls. Laumea plays with inconsistent pad level at times, however, and because of that, defenders can out-leverage him and drive him back. Additionally, he falls off blocks as the down progresses due to being a waist bender and lacking the natural bend in his lower half.
In the passing game, Laumea displays an above-average anchor and ability to sit on most bull rushers—although he does show to give initial ground when faced with top-end speed to power. He has good punch and hand timing and delivers a strong initial shock. He has enough lateral agility to mirror pass rushers around the arc but will struggle with pure speed rushers off the edge. Laumea was at his best inside at guard as his deficiencies were masked when his edges were covered.
Laumea projects as a starting NFL guard at the next level and his versatility to play inside or outside will be heavily valued by NFL teams.
