Film Analysis:

Jared Wiley emerged during the 2023 season as a key go-to target in TCU’s offense and had the best statistical season of his career (47 receptions, 520 yards, 8 touchdowns). Wiley has exceptional size at the TE position combined with a natural understanding of how to get open and vertical speed that makes him an ideal middle-of-the-field target for quarterbacks in the NFL.

On film, Wiley shows that he is alignment-versatile, lining up as a slot receiver, H back, and an in-line TE. As an athlete, Wiley profiles as a smooth accelerator that has a long stride length and can separate from defenders on short crossing routes, catch the ball, and turn upfield to pick up yardage. Wiley also excels when he is in the slot and he can get vertical upfield, becoming a big target in the middle of the field for the quarterback. Wiley has shown to be able to make contested catches in the middle of the field and be a reliable receiver for quarterbacks.

Wiley has good straight-line speed and acceleration. On vertical routes, he can separate from defenders and be a good run-after-the-catch receiver.

The improvements needed in Wiley’s game are surrounded by a particular aspect of his run-after-the-catch ability. Wiley is a linear athlete but when he has to make lateral cuts to make defenders miss, there are many moments where he struggles to do so and defenders can make the tackle. Wiley needs to improve his functional athleticism and contact balance to be able to run through arm tackles. On film, there were multiple occasions where Wiley was tackled by the first defender in the open field. Also, as a blocker, it appears that Wiley is willing to make contact with defenders but needs to improve his upper-body strength to be able to sustain those blocks as there are moments when he is quickly shed by defenders.
