NAME: Drew Sample
CONFERENCE: Pac 12
POSITION: Tight End
CLASS: RS Senior
JERSEY: No. 88
RECRUITMENT RATING: 3-star
WT: 251 lbs
Routes – Lacks the physical traits and nuance to separate from man coverage. Feet are heavy and he’s too tight in the lower half to sink and snap his hips through his breaks. Breaks require too much throttle down and are elongated. Was frequently used to create a rub on a shallow crosser. Ran a limited route tree and needs considerable development to be anything more than a check down option.
Hands – Targets were limited but did not have notable issues with drops. Appears to greet the ball naturally and extend his arms. Showcased the ability to catch the ball in a crowd and hang on through contact.
Ball Skills – Was not tasked with winning at the catch point or tracking the football give his limited receiving role at Washington. There were a few reps where he did illustrate comfort tracking the football and adjusting. Handled simple routes and throws but will need to grow and prove himself.
YAC Ability – Lacks the juice to be a factor after the catch but is decisive to work up the field post-catch and gain the available yards. Will drop his shoulder and challenge tacklers with physicality.
Play Speed – Not a threat to challenge defenses vertically on speed alone. Separating from man coverage is a challenge. Not a laborious mover but the turf certainly doesn’t disappear quickly. Easy for opponents to mirror his patterns.
Play Strength – Has ordinary play strength. There is enough power present to compete in the trenches but he does not consistently win and will get plugged back into gaps. Defensive ends have no trouble fighting pressure with pressure and setting the edge. Easily jammed and rerouted when challenged in his release.
In-line Blocking – Has the frame and strength needed to exchange power in the trenches but is still more of a technician. Committed to working his hips around and positioning his frame to seal lanes. Would create more movement if he played with more consistently leveraged hips and developed more strength in his lower half that would allow him to accelerate his feet and move bodies. Does well to fit his hands.
Space Blocking – Has most of his success as a blocker when he is tasked with lead blocking into a gap, the perimeter and as a vertical blocker. Does well to play under control and connect with moving targets. Angles are generally sound.
Versatility – Vanilla skill set and he doesn’t shine in any one area although he is functional in multiple usages. Most effective as a move blocker but has flashes blocking in-line. Receiving skill set is limited but he can handle basic concepts.
BEST TRAIT – Space Blocking
WORST TRAIT – Receiving
RED FLAGS – None
When evaluating Sample’s game, he does a little bit of everything but doesn’t stand out particularly well in any area. His technique as a blocker is generally sound but his play strength yields modest results. As a receiver, Sample needs considerable development as a route runner and to prove his hands/ball skills given his minimal utilization. With that said, his below average athletic ability suggests his upside is limited. Sample may have some value on special teams and as a No. 3 tight end, but his overall ceiling is low. Likely a depth player.
