PROS: Has steadily developed ball-hawking skills and impact in coverage. Has already set a career high in interceptions through 6 games in 2018 (4). Most effective in zone coverage to drive on the play, takes great angles to work into the hip of targeted receivers on deeper targets. Savage’s early impact at Maryland had been in the run game. His strong field vision allows him to see plays developing and rapidly break on the throw. Savage has a big presence stepping up as a D-gap defender against the run. A big time hitter, capable of dropping the pads on head up tackle challenges and imposing his will on ball carriers. Savage has good click and close ability, once he sees the play he’s typically quicker than his teammates in rallying to the football.

CONS: Darnell Savage Jr. currently presents as a base safety and his strengths in the box raise questions on how effective he may be in single high coverage or playing turn and run man coverage from the slot. Those questions can be best assessed after the season.  In the meantime, Savage projects best as a base personnel safety. Can be a little too over-aggressive in instances of buzzing down off the edge as a free rusher in pressure situations, has given up the edge and needs to be more aware of playing the contain role as the end man on the line.
