NAME: Alohi Gilman
SCHOOL: Notre Dame
JERSEY: No. 11
RECRUITMENT RATING: N/A
WT: 200 lbs
PROS: Well-built with good length. Does not shy away from physical play: will look to re-route receivers and tight ends in the stem and cut off deep routes by initiating contact down the field. Plays through the catch point against bigger receivers and establishes great leverage in catch techniques to disrupt route timing. Multiple pass breakups a result of leverage, physicality, and length.
A sound player against the run whose best plays come from a box safety alignment. Takes good angles to the outside as a contain player and delivers a thud on contact. Will lunge at times, but generally locates the near hip well and brings his hips through contact; plays with natural leverage. Physical profile translates into downhill play against blockers — will activate hands to stack and shed, creating traffic in running lanes.
CONS: Isn’t super explosive or rangy. Plays free safety often for Fighting Irish and doesn’t have range to fully execute the responsibilities of the position. Will get caught flat-footed when reading the mesh point and can be guilty of guessing against RPO looks. Processing of running concepts generally a tick slower than you’d like to see, though coaching points on slow-playing read option looks may be a bit at fault here.
Limited tape of man coverage reps caps current evaluation. As a box safety, must be able to carry tight ends and backs into space in pass coverage, and while current tape is promising, more data is desirable.
