NAME: Jace Sternberger
SCHOOL: Texas A&M
POSITION: Tight End
CLASS: RS Junior
JERSEY: No. 81
RECRUITMENT RATING: 3-star
WT: 250 lbs
PROS: Size and athleticism are excellent. Offers long speed and run-after-catch ability that few tight ends possess. Length and catch radius to snag balls outside his frame. Will go up and compete in tight windows for contested catch balls. Subtle nastiness to his game, fearless over the middle and will focus to reel in balls despite contact. Doesn’t go down easily post-catch.
Physical tools are tantalizing, both as a blocker and receiver. Athletic build with excellent weight distribution allows him to physically hold up against most assignments, although technique is an issue. Does an excellent job positioning himself for catches in tight quarters and will go outside his frame for tough catches. Good concentration to finish on the ball despite adverse conditions at times.
CONS: Hands and athleticism seem natural, but route-running is still a work in progress. Needs to show more decisiveness in his cuts and in creating separation at the top of his route. Can be a beat slow off of the line of scrimmage into his patterns. More build-up speed than quick acceleration. Still raw and will fail to identify incoming chips at the line of scrimmage at times.
Tough, willing blocker, but gets over-extended and falls off of contact too easily. Takes rough angles to the second level and doesn’t adjust well to his opponent on the move. Little too tepid in his approach to defenders in space. Needs to utilize his physical tools better and take control of more reps right away as a blocker.
