With the season officially at the midway point, the landscape is starting to come into focus. Conference play is heating up and so are season-defining head-to-head matchups that shape the Playoff and Bowl Picture. With that comes losses and movement in our poll. In comparing this week’s poll to last week, only three (3!) teams remain in the same slot they did a week ago.
What remains the same is the top-2 slots which continue to belong to Alabama and Georgia. The Tide is our consensus No. 1 while Georgia is slotted at No. 2 by all of our staff except 1. Any guesses on who that might be? There is a slight shift in the Top 4 with Clemson and Ohio State flip-flopping No. 3 and 4.
The biggest riser in this week’s poll is Texas who climbed 9 spots after defeating Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry. The Longhorns are amid an impressive five-game streak that features victories over Tulsa, USC, TCU, Kansas State and the Sooners. Also making a big leap this week is Florida who knocked off LSU one week after beating Mississippi State. The Gators are up 8 spots from last week’s ranking.
On the flipside, Auburn fell 10 spots after suffering its second loss of the season at the hands of Mississippi State on Saturday. Kentucky experienced its first defeat of the season against Texas A&M and slid 6 spots.
We have 3 new schools debuting in the poll this week in USF, Iowa and San Diego State. USF boasts a 5-0 record, Iowa is 4-1 with its only loss coming to Wisconsin and San Diego State is 4-1 with signature wins over Arizona State and Boise State.
Dropping out of the poll this week is Stanford, Ole Miss and Michigan State. The Cardinal fell to Utah while Michigan State lost at home to Northwestern.
As a reminder, our poll is the consensus of all members of the TDN staff’s individual rankings averaged out to build a composite poll.
