Week 1 is always weird. People gripe about preseason rankings and how nobody truly knows which teams are going to be good or not. And that’s true, which creates false expectations on how teams are going to perform. But the process is fluid, and that’s why the season is played. The results dictate the rankings and Week 1 gave us our first taste of who the teams are going to be.
After not being ranked in our Preseason Top 25, Oregon and Utah cracked this week’s rankings. The Ducks took care of Bowling Green 43-21 while the Utes cruised to a 41-10 victory over Weber State. On the contrary, Texas who fell to Maryland and Florida State who lost at home to Virginia Tech no longer have a Top 25 place in our poll.
The biggest risers this week are Notre Dame (+7), West Virginia (+8) and LSU (+10). The Irish defense looked outstanding against Michigan while LSU embarrassed Miami in blockbuster Week 1 battles. Will Grier and the Mountaineers diced up the Tennessee Vols for a convincing 40-14 win on Saturday.
Washington dropped eight slots after falling to Auburn and Miami plummeted 10 spots after its loss to LSU. Michigan also fell 10 spots after its loss to Notre Dame.
At the top of the rankings, the first three spots remain in tact but Ohio State leaped Wisconsin to currently hold the coveted No. 4 spot. While the Badgers only fell one spot to No. 5, our staff was evidently impressed with how the Ohio State offense exploded for 77 points against Oregon State. It’s also worth noting that three different teams received first-place votes – Alabama, Clemson and Georgia. As a reminder, our polls is the consensus of all members of the TDN staff’s individual rankings averaged out to build a composite poll.
Our top 25 after Week 1:
Others receiving votes: Texas, Boston College, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Florida, Iowa, North Carolina State and Missouri.
