NAME: Irv Smith
POSITION: Tight End
JERSEY: No. 82
RECRUITMENT RATING: 3-star
WT: 243 lbs
PROS: Athletic pass-catcher with big slot potential. Finds holes in zone coverage and will adapt his routes to work to space. Hands appear solid, albeit in limited targets. Has the speed to threaten the seam and could be a vertical threat if Alabama employed him as such.
Flashed post-catch acceleration in super limited opportunities. Glimpses of an effective zone blocker if he can improve his footwork. Good hand placement as a run blocker. Held his own in pass protection vs Tennessee. Upside could be on par with the top tight ends in the class
CONS: Plenty of rawness as a blocker and route runner was on display during Smith’s true sophomore season. Late out of his stance, which often caused him to lose first contact and get controlled at the line of scrimmage. Physicality and intensity could improve. Missed reach blocks due to sloppy footwork.
As a receiver, almost a complete unknown. Not many contested catch or high-degree of difficulty catches on tape at Alabama. Haven’t seen much nuance as a route runner to separate from man coverage. Needs a greater sense of urgency when working open. Fumbled one of his 14 catches last season.
