Name: Ira Lewis
CONFERENCE: Big 12
POSITION: Interior Defensive Lineman
JERSEY: No. 9
RECRUITMENT RATING: N/A
WT: 295 lbs
PROS: Successful in getting loose against inside runs. Shows good burst, first to make contact. Average athleticism for a defensive lineman, but above average for a pure defensive tackle. Athleticism adds versatility to his game, can line up in a bunch of different looks. Fills gaps relatively well for his size. Fierce competitor, has a motor and stays in the play after it leaves the trenches. As a one-tech is a decent pass rusher who generates initial interior penetration but loses that productivity as he moves outside. Nice jump off the snap. Active hands. Actively resets opponents hands to win inside leverage. Relentless when given the green light to pin his ears back and rush on passing downs.
Cons: Needs to stronger in his lower half, doesn’t have the best anchor. Though he fills gaps well, he is below average in terms of utilizing his leverage. Can get knocked off-balance and finish by powerful offensive lineman. Raw tackler, this flaw is exposed frequently before the line of scrimmage. Mental processing and awareness has to improve, gets lost in the play too often. If versatility is kept, needs to improve pass rushing skillset. Struggles to disengage/shed. Will often forget to play with technique when ball-carrier gets within his cone. Loses fundamentals and attempts to attack without using a move. Will likely need to gain mass while moving to a 3-tech in a 4-3 or a 5-tech in a 3-4 front. Quick to react to stimuli but not always his specific keys.
