NAME: Andrew Van Ginkel

SCHOOL: Wisconsin

POSITION: Edge Defender

CLASS: Senior (JUCO)

JERSEY: No. 17

HT: 6-4

WT: 233 lbs

D.O.B.: Not Available

PROS: Has shown impressive ability as a zone defender in the shorter areas of the field. Has a strong level of hip mobility and covers a great deal of range from alignment on the line of scrimmage. Ended the year with games featuring an interception (INT for touchdown vs. OSU and then early INT in the Orange Bowl). Is an able athlete in the open field, capable of stunting and slashing forward in addition to positive reps playing in zone coverage. Grew into a notable role in first year on the team in 2017 and thanks to athleticism shows upside to develop further into a refined player.

CONS: Currently has little in the pass rush department, despite 6.5 sacks in 2017. Offers no inside counters and lacks the functional strength to run through pass sets, meaning uncontested rushes and soft blocks are predominant pathway to the quarterback. Will lose advantageous leverage on blocks and fails to use hands to create separation from blockers. Undisciplined at the point of attack and will spin away from contact instead of looking to scrape across the face and play into gaps. Is in dire need of developing functional strength, gets pushed off the line of scrimmage by tight ends and will need to add weight to hold up against the run game if he’s going to stick on the edge.
